1. Two people earned the Turing Award for their work on Unix. Who were they? (While you're at it, what's the Turing Award?)

2. Is it "Unix" or "UNIX"? Who says?

3. What does the wc command do?

4. If you go to the Gutenberg Project web site, you can download the complete text of Jane Austen's novel, Pride and Prejudice. Do so, and save the file in your account.

   • What Unix command can you use to determine the number of words in Pride and Prejudice? How many words are there?
   • Assuming you have saved the novel as the file austen.txt, what does the command "grep Elizabeth austen.txt" do?
   • Same assumption. What does the command "grep Elizabeth austen.txt | wc -l" do?
   • What Unix command can you use to remove Pride and Prejudice from your account? Go ahead and do so.

5. What does the command "whoami" do? Why would you need this command?

6. What does the command "who" do?

7. What's the real story on why AT&T couldn't sell Unix? (Jeff's somewhat apocryphal version might make a good anecdote, but is it true?)
