Carleton College CS 107, Explorations in Computer Science
Assignment:
- Work through Laboratory 3b, and turn in Exercises 1, 2, and 3.
Staple to the lab any screen shots and extra paper required.
- Question 6 in Exercise 1 can be reworded a little more clearly as
"If you were creating a technique to transform lower case text to upper
case text, what simple mathematical rule would you use on the character
codes?"
- Add the following additional question to Exercise 1. Use Google
or your favorite web search engine to find these answers. Cite where
you obtained your results.
9) Who proposed that the Klingon alphabet be added to Unicode? What is
the status of the proposal? What are the Cirth and Tengwar alphabets,
and what
is the status of the corresponding proposals?
10) List three languages that you have never heard of whose alphabets
are
included in Unicode. Where are these languages spoken?
- Add the following additional question to Exercise 2:
6) Consider the thirty-two bit pattern:
0010 0110 0110 0111 0111 0100 0011 1011
What is the interpretation of these thirty-two bits if you consider
them to represent:
a) Four ASCII characters?
b) Two Unicode characters? (Feel free to draw these by hand.)
(There were parts c and d here: I removed them. No longer required.)
You may find it helpful to turn the binary number into hexadecimal
before searching
the Unicode site. Feel free to
use applets from previous labs as you see fit.
