As teams develop better stat tracking techniques, sports analysis has become increasingly data-driven. This can be found at the professional and collegiate DI level but has yet to become mainstream in DIII sports. Many of these teams use primitive recording methods and do not have the ability to create real-time, in-the-moment statistics to help with game management and decision making. We addressed this problem at Carleton by creating an iPad application for our DIII Varsity Women’s Volleyball team. The app allows intuitive data entry for key in-game actions and provides relevant statistics to assist in decision making.
Volleyball is a complex, fast-paced sport that involves a large volume of statistics which can be recorded in real time during games. Currently, Carleton’s varsity women’s volleyball team has four people, two assistant coaches and two student managers, devoted to recording different statistics on paper at each game they play. To convert these statistics into a more readable format requires extensive post-game work, meaning that the team gets little in-game value from the data. To fix this we developed an iPad app which allows coaches to quickly log hits, process the statistics automatically, and create informative visualizations.
The traditional method of tracking shots in volleyball involves pens and paper. While there are many advantages to using paper, we thought we could do better.
And we were right!
Shottey provides a clean and efficient interface for volleyball shot tracking. After selecting a player everything disappears except for the player's previous shots which are displayed in gray.
Our clutter free interface allows the user to quickly track and classify shots in realtime while the game is happening.
Shottey collects the following attributes of each shot:
Shot visualization on paper can get pretty cluttered. Shottey provides a nice, digital interface to solve that problem. With a variety of filters, and two courts to allow for easy comparison, our app allows you to see whatever you want to see with ease.
Shottey provides a classic box-score view which updates in real time as you track shots. Users can sort by column and by team to view individual player and rotation performance.
To analyze in depth statistics after a game, send yourself an Excel file with all possibly relevant information.
