Does the net work?
In this project, we examined the phonological network, a graph-based approach to modeling phonological confusability of words. This model has been previously used in speech perception research. Specifically, we were interested in the robustness of graph-theoretic measures of the phonological network to individual differences in lexicon size and composition. We focused on two ways that lexicons can differ. Firstly, lexicons can differ based on the assumption that people know different words as a result of their background and experiences. Secondly, individuals acquire words over the course of their lifetime. Throughout this project, we focused on how these differences in lexicon composition affected the properties of the phonological network.
