MAT 241: Discrete Mathematics

Fall 2020

hw02

With the exception of survey1, all other items should be completed before next class.
  1. If you don't have a Bethel Zoom account, go sign up for one. Make sure you are logged in when you connect to our subsequent Zoom meetings.
  2. Read the syllabus (the course web page). Bring questions you have to class on Day 2. You will sign something in the next item to indicate you read and agree with the syllabus.
  3. I would like to get to know each of you a bit. Find survey1 on Moodle and fill it out by Day 3.
  4. Read the textbook:
    • Read the Preface (To the Student) starting on page xxii.
    • Scan through the table of contents and appendices.
    • Read chapter 1.
  5. Optional: read Discrete Math: The Graphic Novel (DMGN) Prologue and Chapter 1.
  6. Read the homework guidelines, work through the following exercises, scan as a single PDF, and submit to Moodle before next class.
  7. Exercises: 1.4 # 1, 2, 4*, 6*, 10, 11bc.

    * 4: Note that exercises with solutions in the back of the book will often not be graded. However, you should still completely work out the exercise before you look at the solution in Appendix H. You should turn in your (original) solution to these exercises. Failure to do so (with full justification) may result in deduction. Copying solutions from the back of the book is considered plagiarism.

    * 6: Hint: With 4 people ABCD, there are 3 possible assignments: AB,CD or AC,BD or AD,BC. Your job is to find a preference list that fails to be stable. You show this by verifying that all three possible assignments fail to be stable. For example: in the assignment AB,CD perhaps you show that B and D elope. Now check out the other two possible assignments.
