hw02

1. Read the syllabus (the course web page). Bring questions you have to class. You will sign something in the next item to indicate you read the syllabus.
2. I would like to get to know each of you a bit. Print out survey 1 (preferably double-sided to save paper; otherwise, stapled), fill it out, and bring it to class.
3. Install Mathematica if you have your own computer by following the instructions. (Log in using your Bethel username and password.)
4. Work through the Mathematica & Bethel Labs/Systems Introduction located in this folder.
   • The IntroLab??-??.pdf file is a general handout used for all math courses at Bethel, so use the directions in this section as a guide for which pieces you need to complete. At some point soon, you will want to complete the entire lab on your laptop (if you own one) and on a Bethel lab computer (the mathcs lab, CC230, is a good place). You will set up recommended shortcuts correctly (this is a problem if you don’t do this right!) and learn other procedures. It is useful to become comfortable with both platforms (laptop if you have one and Bethel networked computers).
   • When you come to the Mathematica Introduction section of the handout, you will need a file called IntroLabMmaFile.nb, which is in the same folder linked above. Download and save a copy of this file and name it with your last name appended with "HW02a" (yourlastnameHW02a.nb). Then work through the file.
   • Sometimes Safari browser on Mac computers likes to add .txt to the end of .nb files. If this happens, change the file extension back to .nb. If you don't know how to do this, look up directions or use a different browser (like Google Chrome).
   • There are directions for printing. Do not print. You will submit this assignment to Moodle electronically. Do note the instructions for when you need to print in the future.
   • Submit the completed file to Moodle assignment hw02. This is due by the next class, but you should get it done today so you have time to do the other pieces below.
5. Watch Hands on Start to Mathematica video.
   • If you do this in the computer lab, you will need headphones in order to hear the sound.
   • Note: %number refers to the output from the line numbered number (for example, %3 refers to the output from line 3). Your line numbers may be different than the teacher's line numbers, so adjust this accordingly.
   • Open a new notebook, save it as yourlastnameHW02b.nb. While you watch the video up until 26:32, create everything that the teacher is creating in your notebook. As he goes fast, you will likely have to pause the video and even go back occasionally to watch a part again in order to keep up. (I had to do so a few times when I tried it.)
   • When you are finished watching the video, put your name and username at the top of the file in a cell that has "title" format. Then, at the bottom add and evaluate the following two lines:

     $MachineType
     $SessionID
     

   • Submit your notebook to Moodle assignment hw02. (Make sure the first file you submitted above is still there.)
   • Note regarding free-form linguistic input that is first taught in the video. Your professors in math courses (including me) will expect that you always have proper syntax in Mathematica notebooks that you hand in for course credit. So if you use free-form input, always change what you have typed to the correct Wolfram Language input. Your goal should be to use the correct syntax without needing the free-form input as you become more familiar with Mathematica.
6. Review textbook Chapter 5 as needed and start working on hw03a.
