What was our project?

Our project was to make a sensor network which successfully transmitted, processed and manipulated data, thus providing output which gives insight into the space people are interacting with. We chose to go an artistic route, taking the distance, sound and color information our sensors receive and creating sound and visualizaton.

What did we create?

We implemented a sensor network as an interactive art installation inside the Weitz Center for Creativity. The site for these sensors is at the top of the main stairs leading out from the Weitz Atrium, by the main elevator (see diagram).

This location is a highlytrafficked area in the building while minimally disrupting students seeking quiet study. In this space we express our data through audio and visualization. We've created a soundscape with different sensors triggering different sounds. The sensor input magnitude modulates the sounds through various filters.

Types of Sensors

Vibration Sensor:

A vibration sensor is placed underneath the main stairs leading from the atrium allows us to interpret foot traffic through that part of the Weitz in a new way. The sensor provides another dimension of flow through an area— not only a headcount, but also some measure of intensity. The vibrations set off thunder sounds in the main visualization area- if you stomp hard enough you can hear a lighting clap!

Distance Sensors:

Distance sensors are placed throughout the main walkways leading into the landing. As you go by, your movement triggers musical tones corresponding to a scale based on how closed you are. Each sensor represents a different instrument, string, brass, etc.
